Top 3 Things to Remember When Subbing a Yoga Class

“Hi Everybody – I’m Catherine”
Blank stares…Crickets.
Every yoga instructor has walked into a class as a sub and had this experience.
So how do you survive and better yet, THRIVE?
HERE ARE MY TOP 3 TIPS FOR SUBBING YOGA CLASSES:
1- ACKNOWLEDGE – Acknowledge that there has been a change in expectation, but allude to a positive outcome.
‘I know you were expecting so and so, but you never know… a sub walked into my class 12 years ago and I’ve been a student of hers ever since.’
2- MANAGE YOUR NERVES – When we’re nervous, we withdraw and wonder, ‘Will they like me?’ ‘Will they be disappointed?’ ‘What if I’m not as good a teacher as _____?”
This focus on our egos actually takes us AWAY from our students, robbing them of the precious attention that we, The SUB, are trying to deliver. Instead, try softening by giving yourself a pep talk with Tip #3!
3- CONSIDER YOUR OWN SPECIFIC GIFTS – Maybe you’re funny, or you have a beautiful voice or you just teach a phenomenal ab sequence.
Reconnecting with what you and only you can give your students is a fabulous antidote to insecurity.
What do you fear most about subbing yoga or fitness classes, and how do you overcome it?
I’d love to hear your thoughts!!!
