Fire Cider

Fire Cider

On a wintry January morning, I woke up and heard ‘Make Fire Cider today.’ I was not feeling ill in any way, and I have never made this before, but when I get downloads like this, I do try to heed them.

Fire Cider is a folk remedy attributed to herbalism pioneer, Rosemary Gladstar and was birthed sometime in the 1970s.

I thought it was from Appalachia but it’s a 100% California hippie creation – even closer to my heart!

Part medicine, part food, Fire Cider is made by infusing ACV (apple cider vinegar) with a variety of antibacterial and antivirals (garlic, ginger, onion, horseradish), and some herbs if desired. It is so easy to make and I HIGHLY recommend it as a salad dressing (if the health tonic aspect doesn’t resonate.)

I have not felt under the weather lately, so I can’t testify whether Fire Cider works as an immune booster. However, if you’ve ever drank ginger tea or felt a ‘boost’ from eating garlic or ginger, you may experience that also when using this as a tonic. It is invigorating!

Here’s what I did (since I had no idea I’d be making it that day)

INGREDIENTS

QUART MASON JAR (4 C)

  • 1 finely chopped red onion

  • 7-10 garlic cloves, crushed

  • 2 TBSP minced ginger

  • 1 TBSP horseradish (from a bottle, root is preferred)

  • 1 TBSP turmeric

  • 2 TSP black pepper

Shake and cover with lid. The ACV should cover the chopped contents. Place in cool dark place for 1 month. Shake it 1x/day.

I placed it near my drafty front door and gave it an upside down shake when I passed it. After about 40 days, the ACV had grown slightly cloudy so I decided to check it out.

To my delight, the vinegar smelled soooo aromatic, like it was dying to be used as a vinaigrette.

Before Fire Cider, I had a go to, basic salad dressing that everyone liked:

  • Good peppery olive oil

  • Good balsamic vinegar

  • Finely diced shallot

  • Small dollop Dijon mustard

  • Salt & Pepper

  • Drizzle honey

Well, this is way better.

I drained the contents and the liquid filled just this small 2C jar. Turmeric and black pepper settling to the bottom.

FIRE CIDER SALAD DRESSING

Mix 2 TBSP of Fire Cider, 1.5 TBSP of good peppery olive oil, and a drizzle of honey.

Pour over mixed salad greens.

TRULY DIVINE

If you enjoy making DIY salad dressings, I highly recommend trying Fire Cider as the vinegar. It completely transforms a basic salad into something transcendent. I wonder how it would be with my broccoli slaw?

If you try this, let me know what you think!

Namaste,

Catherine & Satya
