Myofascial Pec Release

Myofascial Pec Release

The front of the upper chest is an area of the body everyone can benefit from exploring.

Most people feel some tightness in this area–leaning in to screens closes off the front of the chest. Gravity compounds this as we age.

While there many ‘heart opening’ postures in classical yoga, sometimes we need hands on work in this area. However, due to privacy and draping regulations, it can be difficult to find good massage therapy for the upper chest.

This is where self-care comes in.

If you are new to this area of your body, I recommend starting with my:

T-Spine Video and the Posture Refresh With a Hand Towel and the Easy Posture Refresh With a Strap

Try those 3 videos out for a few weeks and progress to this one.

MYOFASCIAL PEC RELEASE

Equipment:

1 black ball by Yamuna

2 yoga blocks

1 bolster

This myofascial pec and upper chest release is demonstrated with a mid-section twist.

The reason for this is that fascia, the 3 dimensional matrix of connective tissue in your body, unwinds along a spiral pattern.

If you find the twist awkward or uncomfortable, simply approach the props from a prone position i.e. lay on your belly, propped up on your forearms, and lower onto the ball.

Try this and let me know how it feels.

Namaste,

Catherine

P.S.

Classical Heart Opening Yoga Postures:

  1. Cobra

  2. Supported Fish

  3. Camel

  4. Bow

  5. Upward Bow (Wheel)
