Simplify Your Home

Simplify Your Home

As we all spend more time indoors, I feel called to write about our homes.

The rooms we’re living in and how these spaces can be simplified.

Made greener, and more harmonious.

With fewer things.

I’ve never liked green recommendations that advise spending thousands of dollars on products you won’t use.

Here is a list of 10 things I would take with me anywhere.

The criteria for being included on this list are:

  1. reduces exposure to environmental toxins

  2. reduces use of plastics or paper

As always, I am not affiliated with these companies or products except as a fan.

Namaste, Catherine

1 – New Wave Shower Filter $28.49

City water making your skin itchy?
Contains16oz of bacteriostatic KDF-55 and 2oz of crystal quartz. Together, they remove chlorine and hydrogen sulfide, reduce heavy metals, and naturally soften the water. Designed to fit almost all showers; simply screw on between the water pipe and your favorite showerhead.

2 – Pentair Everpure Drinking Water Filter H-300 System $159.99

  • Reduces the following contaminants: lead, cysts such as giardia lambila, and cryptosporidium
  • Removes chlorine taste and odor, dirt and cloudiness, mold and algae and particles 1/2-Micron and larger in size
  • Removes volatile organic chemicals (vocs), including THMS and delivers bacteriostatic control

You only need to hire a plumber to install this, and a drinking water spigot. The cartridges can be replaced by a layperson. Roughly annually, for about $70.

3 – Luxe Bidet $39.99

No need to hoard TP.
Straightforward installation – I did it myself.

4 – Chomper Chalk $34.00

Reduce the use of plastics with this 4 ingredient tooth powder that really works. I met the inventor at a farmer’s market in Ojai several years ago. He has a background in aerospace and this product was created from a problem he was trying to solve at Lockheed Martin. This 1oz size lasts 3 months.
Your teeth will feel so incredibly clean!

5 – Bee’s Wrap $18.00

Eliminate plastic wrap.
Surprisingly, they do not retain odors, even from onions and garlic.

6 – Hi Bar Shampoo Bar $13.95

Zero plastic used in this product.
If you’ve ever had to use bar soap on your hair, you know what a disaster that is. Stiff and unpliable hair.
This is NOT that shampoo bar. I was pleasantly surprised!
The green colored bar (Maintain) is safe for color treated hair, has built in moisturizers and is packaged in recyclable paper.

7 – Everybody Loves The Sunshine Sunscreen $22.00

Exposure to the sun is vital for all living organisms.

Brief sun exposure in the morning hours resets our circadian rhythms, boosts mood and regulates sleep.

Make sure to balance your indoor screen time with outdoor movement time.

I’m not a fan of chemical sunscreens that contain oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, or octinoxate.

This sunscreen contains raspberry seed oil which is a naturally occurring, mild sunscreen.

For the very fair going out into the sun, this product is also available with non-nanoparticle zinc. Non-nanoparticle, uncoated, pharmaceutical-grade zinc oxide is the purest form of zinc available. The molecular size of these zinc particles are too large to be absorbed by the skin. Uncoated zinc oxide as this is purer than titanium dioxide and coated zinc oxide is made with a synthetic silicone coating, triethoxycaprylylsilane. Uncoated zinc is known to improve the appearance of age spots and melasma, too.

8 – VejiBag $25.00

This is my favorite way to keep greens. Thoroughly wet the bag, wring and add greens. Extra Large is 14 x 17″

9 – Metal Pour Over Coffee Filter $17.99

10 – Plants, Plants, Plants – Remove excess furniture and belongings and add plants. Plants clean your indoor air, and are healing for the spirit.
