The Gift Of Private Instruction

The Gift Of Private Instruction

Most of us benefit from structure.

Knowing that we have a teacher waiting for us and a fun curriculum to learn, helps us develop new habits.

When learning new things, the gift of private instruction is a teacher invested in YOU. That teacher should have goals for you, related to your goals, and should track your progress towards them.

That teacher should listen carefully to your pain points, health history and note what type of learner you are. For example, do you like the same class with new things only intermittently sprinkled, or do you like a challenge each class?

The teacher should provide fun, inspiring classes that are safe, varied and something you look forward to.

I aspire to be all those things as a teacher of Yoga, Pilates and movement.

Here’s a personal story about when I was on the other end, as a student.

Over a decade ago, I tried to learn Tai Chi.

I say ‘tried’ because although I attended classes, the practice did not stick.

I attended a drop-in, all levels group class – much like many group fitness classes – where the instruction is directed mostly at the experienced students. You had to have SOME knowledge of the material to even be able to follow. I had none.

Somehow I thought that if I bought the Tai Chi shoes it would help me. (We’ve all been there, right?)

Eventually I stopped attending as I had neither connection with the instructor, the instruction, or the other students. The Tai Chi practice was impenetrable to me.

In reflection, I think this learning model is unhelpful to most beginners. It certainly is no way to retain/recruit new students.

Fast forward to recently when I’ve been studying privately with an instructor. There is a curriculum, twice weekly classes, and I am both challenged and held accountable. This has been my way to adopt new habits, learn new things, and retain them.

It’s said to take 3 months to develop new habits.

What habit could be more important that the habit of health, or as I say, ‘movement for a pain-free life.’
