The Purification of Yoga

The Purification of Yoga

Purification is at the heart of all yoga practices.

That feeling of lightness you experience after yoga practice is the result of purification.

Purification of the physical body through movement and breath.

Purification of the mind by reducing mental fluctuations.

And ultimately, purification of attitude and behavior towards oneself and others.

The ancient yogic texts have much to say about purity.

Saucha, translated as purity or cleanliness, is described as a virtue integral to spiritual development in both the Yamas and the Niyamas.

How can this ancient concept of saucha help us in modern life?

Saucha’s true meaning is broad and holistic in scope.

Purity of body. Purity of mind. Purity of speech.

Embodying saucha means keeping physically clean, maintaining an uncluttered living space, eating clean and nutritious food, speaking truthfully but uninjuriously, and thinking loving thoughts towards ourselves and others.

One of the quickest ways to experience the purification of yoga is through Vinyasa Yoga. A vigorous style, also called Power Yoga, Vinyasa consists of flowing movements synchronized to the breath. This style of yoga will render you blissed and bendy, in a puddle of sweat and maybe even happy tears.

Cleansed.

Renewed.

***

If Vinyasa yoga is not your thing, or if any injuries prevent you from practice, not to worry.

Purification is a result of all yoga practices, and although the less strenuous styles (Iyengar, Yin, Restorative, Kundalini) may appear less outwardly dramatic, their benefits may be even more subtle, and profound.

I’ve found that after more than two decades of practice, the slowest, most attention filled practice is the richest.
