TWISTING SIDE ANGLE POSE (Parivrtta Parsvakonasana)
TWISTING SIDE ANGLE POSE
Twists, also referred to as ‘revolving’ poses, are an essential component of a well-rounded yoga practice.
Poses such as TWISTING TRIANGLE, TWISTING CHAIR and HALF LORD OF THE FISHES massage the digestive organs, stimulate digestion and assist the body in detoxification.
Twists work by creating a ‘wringing’ effect on the body. In the twist, or compression phase, blood and toxins are forced out, while in the release phase, as the body untwists, fresh blood rushes in.
ALIGNMENT
In WARRIOR I, lower the torso parallel to the ground.
Keeping the hips square over the right front knee, extend through the crown of the head, lengthening the spine.
Set the left palm on the outside of the right foot.
Extend the right arm to the sky.
Look up at the right thumb, keeping the neck, throat and gaze soft.
WORK IN THE POSE
Beginning and intermediate students will find ease in this pose by releasing the back heel off the mat.
In other words, CRESCENT POSE would be the starting point.
Gently press the back side of the left arm into the right knee and revolve the heart to the sky.
If you like, extend the right arm over the right ear, creating one long line from the RIGHT FINGERTIPS down to the LEFT HEEL.
