Yoga Bolster Review

Yoga Bolster Review

On occasion, people ask me – what type of bolster should I buy?

Yoga Bolsters are differentiated by stuffing type which dictates weight. They also have covers of different hands (textures) so if you’re a tactile person, this is something to note.

In this video, I explain the three type of yoga bolsters I have, the differences between them, and which one I use the most (listed in order of descending price point and weight).

Crystal Cove Set by Brentwood Home – I bought this 3 piece bundle when it launched because I liked the look of the grey quilted covers, and the appeal of the buckwheat hulls filling. They are indeed nice looking. The weight of them makes impractical if you are travelling yoga teacher, so I never used them for house calls.

Private Yoga Instructor Santa Monica Los Angeles Catherine Tingey Yoga Yoga Bolster ReviewI found myself using the meditation cushion the most however, often it is just too firm for me. Maybe other people’s bums will enjoy it more.

I don’t use this set much. In place of a meditation cushion I use one of the bolsters below, or a yoga block with a blanket on top of it.

  • REMOVEABLE QUILTED COVERS

  • CONTENTS-buckwheat hulls

  • PROS: looks nice

  • CONS: very heavy and firm

GAIAM Bolster

Cotton batting yoga bolsters are the OG. You will still find them in yoga studios. Depending on the thickness, they may hold shape over time, or compress and wilt.

This was my go-to bolster for many years and I used this with clients. It has a microfibre removeable cover, is filled with cotton batting, and is midweight. Over time, the batting compressed and the bolster lost some shape. I still use this as a meditation cushion though.

Supported Chiilds Pose prop set up with a cotton batting bolster that became flimsy with age

Manduka Bolster

These are the new iteration of yoga bolster with foam core. It has the soft-hand microfiber cover like the GAIAM one, but it’s lighter weight. If I still did housecalls, this is what I would carry. The foam keeps its integrity and this bolster is ideal for creating wedges for Supported poses like Supported Childs Pose and Supported Bound Angle.

I like this bolster the best and use it often. There are lower priced foam core, microfiber bolsters on Amazon like this one.
