Yoga for Golfers

Yoga for Golfers

Over the years I’ve had several serious golfers as clients.

Through teaching them, I’ve gained insight to a game that once seemed impenetrable to me.

Hearing how their golf game improved after taking up yoga, and witnessing how strong and flexible they became, has proven to me how beneficial yoga is for golfers.

More specifically, I’ve seen two major improvements in my golfing clients since they began practicing yoga weekly with me:

  • Power in their swing defined as how far the ball travels.

  • Post game recovery as defined by how stiff/flexible they feel after playing.

If you love golf and are looking for a complementary modality that improves your game AND your well-being, yoga can help you.

Golf is one of the few sports I know of that favors asymmetry. Most golfers swing in one direction only. This can result in imbalances in the right versus left sides of their bodies.

A powerful golf swing comes from the marriage of strength and flexibility in the back, neck, shoulders, core and hips. That is a significant portion of the human body.

I like to call yoga a work-in because it cultivates an inner strength, flexibility and focus that manifests in the physical body.

Here are some yoga poses I recommend for golfers:

  1. Cat/Cow

  2. Balancing Table – Tiger Curls

  3. Open Twisting Table

  4. Standing Forward Bend Twist

  5. Downward Facing Dog

  6. Gentle Reclined Twist

I also recommend poses like Gate, and Hip Openers like Lunges/Lizard to encourage hip mobility.

Namaste,

Catherine
