Yoga for Longevity

Yoga for Longevity

I know of few mind-body movement modalities as malleable to the seasons of life as yoga.

When you invest time and resources to learn yoga privately, the tools you gain need to adapt to you throughout life.

This means your teacher must modify the practice to suit you, the client, through sickness and in health.

Private Yoga Instructor Los Angeles Santa Monica Give Yoga for LongevityI’m grateful when I first started teaching 10 years ago, I immediately had breadth in my clientele.

My first clients were a professional athlete, an entertainer and an independent living center where most of the participants came to class with assistance (an aid or a walker/wheelchair).

I quickly learned how my classical yoga curriculum had to adapt to suit the needs of my clients.

It is vitally important that your private yoga teacher honor the seasons of your body (sickness, health, injury, celebration) along with the seasons of nature.

Over the past 10 years, I’ve had the privilege of having clients from age 11 to the 90s.

Let’s look at how yoga positively affects longevity

  • Increased flexibility and range of motion in spine and all joints

  • Increased breath capacity and efficiency

  • Lower blood pressure

  • Better sleep

  • Lower cortisol levels

  • Increased peace of mind/contentment

Yoga versus Tai Chi

In terms of mind-body movement modalities for longevity, Yoga and Tai Chi are the superstars.

After studying Tai Chi for the last 2 years, I can say the Tai Chi learning curve is far steeper than yoga.

Why?

The building blocks of Tai Chi are ‘forms’. A form consists of several movements practiced in a flowing style. You can spend months, even years on a single form.

In yoga, the building blocks are static poses [asana] and basic poses can be learned in a few private sessions.

I think both practices are phenomenal for longevity and when applicable for the client, I will incorporate elements of Tai Chi in my teaching.

If you are looking to radically change your health, sleep patterns, and daily sense of being within your body PLUS all the benefits I mentioned above, feel free to reach me here.

In abundant health,

Catherine
